Etsy Featured Shop: Dr. K Soap Company

Congratulations to our Etsy Ireland team member, Rob Karreman. His shop, Dr. K Soap Company was featured on the Etsy blog last week. Well done Dr. K!

Here is the original post as taken from the Etsy blog: https://blog.etsy.com/en/2014/featured-shop-dr-k-soap-company/.

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

My name is Rob Karreman, or “Dr. K” of Dr. K Soap Company. I was born in Cape Town, South Africa and moved to Ireland in 2007. I’m now an Irish citizen, and currently live in County Cork, Ireland.

I started my business in 2011 after funding ran out for my position as a lab researcher at a university. Soapmaking always appealed to the biochemist and scientist in me, so it was a natural transition. I really liked the idea of experimentation in my own lab; it was, and still is, an exciting and fun journey to come up with a range of body care products. While my business started in the kitchen, I have since moved to a dedicated workshop which has greatly enhanced my creativity and productivity. Graphic design and photography, which are both hobbies for me, have proven invaluable in the establishment and promotion of my brand.

Inspiration for my products is intrinsic to my personality – I am inquisitive and a perfectionist, so product formulation and development checks all the right boxes. I have always loved nature; living in Ireland, I am fortunate to be surrounded by lush unspoiled beauty, which inspires the use of all-natural ingredients and earthy colors in my packaging.

I found out about Etsy while looking for ways to get my product out to a worldwide market. I was inspired by Etsy’s approach to the promotion of handmade wares and a self-sufficient working culture, so I joined up right away. Since Ireland is a small island with a relatively small population, Etsy became my “window to the world,” and before I knew it, I was exporting my soapy wares to far-flung corners of the globe. Some exotic destinations I have shipped to include French Guinea, the Cayman Islands, Haiti and the Faroe Islands. Etsy has had a profound effect on my life – it has helped create an income and a full-time job for me.

My future goals involve developing more all-natural, personal care products for men. I would also like to “give back” to the country that took me in by creating local Irish job opportunities. My long-term dream is to have a workshop in the countryside with views of mountains and waterfalls that exemplify the charm and romanticism of this beautiful country.

Calling all Bloggers or Blogger Wannabes

Recently I set up my own website at www.ShenWong.com. As you can imagine it is becoming too much work to maintain both the site as well as my Etsy Shop. As such, I am making the transition to move my efforts and resources from Etsy to my own site. While my Etsy shop will still be open, I will not be updating it with new products. With the move, it no longer makes sense for me to keep my position as Etsy Ireland Blog Co-Ordinator. Nor do I have the time anymore. So this role is now open to all Etsy Ireland members.

Do you currently blog? If not, would you like to? There are many benefits to blogging for Etsy Ireland.

Reasons why you should blog for us:
  • Gain exposure to a huge audience,
  • Improve your writing skills,
  • Share your ideas with real people who want to hear them,
  • Improve SEO by adding a link to shop in your posts,
  • Meet like minded people,
  • Great way to get more involved with the team.
If you would like to get involved, convo Sue at AmazingBeads.

I just wanted to thank you all for your lovely comments and feedback this year. You have no idea how good it feels when someone makes the effort to leave a kind comment after all the work you put into writing a post. It lets me feel the love. Good to know that someone is reading ;)

Keep up the great work all you wonderful crafters! I know where I will be shopping for my all my unique handmade Birthday & Christmas gifts! -_^

Leave a comment below if you can think of other benefits for blogging with the Etsy Ireland team.

How to Craft a Killer About Page

Reposted from the Etsy Blog.
Story by Julie Schneider
Published on Feb 06, 2014 in Seller Handbook

When Forbes staff writer Hollie Slade was researching a story about running a small business from home, she went to Etsy to find shop owners to profile. Specifically, Slade was looking for shop owners with at least three staff members. After perusing the About pages of several shops, she found two that fit the bill:Bread and Badger, a sandblasted drinkware shop owned by Amanda Siska, and Dock Artisan,  a shop selling wooden charging docks for mobile devices owned by Joel Young. Both shops describe their at-home workshops and list their shop members on their respective About pages, which landed them spots in Slade’s published story, “Running a Startup from Home: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”
Your shop’s About page gives you a chance to tell the story of your business. In turn, About pages all across Etsy collectively paint a portrait of the community as a whole. An informative and captivating About page can help create a devoted following of customers. It can also spark unexpected opportunities, including press coverage and collaborations. Amanda and Joel reported a spike in traffic from Forbes readers in their Shop Stats. Amanda notes that her social media fans were duly impressed. Being featured in the story, she says, has had “a lot of impact in establishing our credibility as a shop.”
But figuring out the best way to put your shop’s story into words — and images — might seem daunting. With that in mind, here are four tips to get you started.

Tell Your Shop’s Origin Story

The best About pages feature a memorable story that describes how the shop owner got started. “People need to connect the product and the story with the person who made it,” says Joel Young of Dock Artisan, which is based in Murphys, California. ”Otherwise, it’s just this cyber land of ‘Where does it come from?’”  Joel traces the evolution of his family business, including the initial creative spark and notable milestones, on Dock Artisan’s About page.
On Bread and Badger’s About page, Amanda Siska describes how she dreamed of being a tattoo artist before discovering that glass engraving is similar in technique, but, she writes, “without sterilization and possible regret.” Amanda also describes how her husband, Sean, quit his day job to help her expand the Portland, Oregon-based business. If you develop a case of writer’s block when you sit down to write your story, imagine you’re explaining it to a customer at a craft fair or to a friend. Then, put those words to paper.
Bread and Badger hard at work.
Amanda Siska hard at work.

Captivate With Beautiful Photos

High-quality images are another key to great About pages. This is your chance to give customers a behind-the-scenes look at your company, so include images of yourself practicing your craft in your workspace. If you’re hoping to attract press coverage, be sure to upload five professional-level, high-resolution photos (those measuring at least 1,400 pixels wide). This shows you’ll be ready with the good stuff if the press comes a-knocking.
Around the time of his Featured Shop interview in 2012, Joel of Dock Artisan sprung for a session with a professional photographer. He says the investment has served him well. “If you’re an online company, everything you have is your pictures, your product, your workspace,” Joel says. “So, don’t skimp on pictures and don’t skimp on quality.” If hiring a photographer isn’t in your budget, take your own publicity-ready photos and organize a photo shoot on a budget by using readily available elements like flattering natural light, simple backgrounds and props for context.

Vive la Différence

Highlight unique materials, production processes and anything else that might help your shop stand out. For instance, Joel Young’s About page describes the ecologically sound practices that his shop uses to source local materials for their product lines, which fuse nature and technology. “We believe in natural selection when it comes to harvesting our wood,” he says. “Every year, storms come through the Sierra Nevada Mountains and blow over trees and break limbs. We give this wood a new life with purpose.”
Across the world in Vilnius, Lithuania, Inga, Kestas and Viktoria from Bure Bure Slippers use their About page to explain how they source wool from their herd of Skudde sheep and use ancient felting techniques to create their line of shoes and slippers. They paint a vivid picture of their mountainous rural organic farmstead through striking images and connect the dots from their free-grazing flock to a finished pair of cozy footwear. On Bread and Badger’s About page, Amanda explains how she and her husband do their own sandblasting in their garage using a CrystalBlast cabinet and 60-gallon air compressor.
Bure Bure Slippers’s process extends from farm to feet.

Meet and Greet

When you include photos and information about you and your shop members on your About page, you put a friendly, approachable face on your business. On her About page, Valerie Lloyd, founder of Seattle-based vintage craft supply shop Smile Mercantile, writes: “I like to think of the Smile Mercantile as an old-time general store with friendly and reliable folk (me) working behind the counter. I have a deep love for history, and I find that living with vintage pieces connects me to the past, and the people who were here before me.”
Bread and Badger’s About page includes a smiling image of Amanda Siska and the names and photos of her husband and shop member. It also links to Bread and Badger’s website and Facebook and Twitter accounts, encouraging people to interact with the business in a variety of ways. “If we were a brick-and-mortar storefront, I would be sitting in the store talking to people and they’d be able to walk right up and talk to me,” Amanda says. “I want customers to know about me, my business and even my family. That’s the kind of thing that I would talk about if they were to meet me in person, so I don’t need to be too shy about that online either.”
Amanda creates digital artwork for Bread and Badger from her hand drawings, and prints it on transparency film.

Design & Craft Council of Ireland - How to register

The Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) is currently undergoing a name change to better reflect the arts they represent. They are now known as the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI).

The DCCoI is the main champion of the craft industry in Ireland, providing information and training while actively promoting crafts. Activities are funded by Enterprise Ireland so you will often see them promoting each other.

Registration with the DCCoI is currently free and I would highly recommend all crafters to join it. For me, membership is a form of recognition and endorsement by an organisation. Recognition with a national craft organisation can make your business look more reliable to the general public.

To apply, simply complete and submit the form below in resources. Your application will then be assessed by a DCCoI panel. You should be notified within the next two months if your application has been successful.

Membership to the DCCoI means a lot to me. On top of obtaining a greater sense of pride for my work due to official recognition, there are also many benefits.

Benefits of DCCoI membership:
  • Trust - Membership with a national organisation can help to instill trust in new customers.
  • Awareness - By inclusion in their members directory, more people may know about your business.
  • Regular e-Zine with information of industry news, training, support and craft markets.
  • SEO - Full membership includes a bio about your business and a link to your website. This is a highly quality link and can improve your page search ranking with Google.

I hope you found this post helpful.

Hot Topic #1: Short Term Enterprise Allowance - Financial Support

Many people may be put off working full time on their craft business. But with some savings and a bit of knowledge of financial facilities available, your dreams can be within reach!

How I quit my job and got supplemented support:
  1. Applied for the Back To Work Enterprise Allowance,
  2. Prepared a detailed business plan,
  3. Applied for the Short-Term Enterprise Allowance with the Tolka Partnership.
          Weekly allowance approved!

After I left my job, I knew that I wanted to set up my own business. This will be a slow process as there is a lot of set up work and I will not be bringing in much money within the first couple of months.

To overcome the lack of income in the early stages of my set-up, I applied for the Back To Work Enterprise Allowance (BTWEA) otherwise known as the dole or scratcher. This is a fund for people who are unemployed. Until I've created business viable products, I considered myself to be an unemployed person pursuing on a VERY expensive hobby/idea. On that basis, it is fair for me to avail of this fund.

Recently I completed my online shop set up on Etsy, and made some sales, so it was no longer fair for me to be on an unemployment allowance. I have since successfully applied for the Short-Term Enterprise Allowance (STEA). This pays the same as the BTWEA and for the same nine month period, but rather than coming out of a pot for unemployed people, it is for start up entrepreneurs.

Benefits of STEA over BTWEA
  • Money is paid straight into your bank account.
  • No need to sign-in anymore at the unemployment office.
  • No need to attend meetings with case worker.
Note: You cannot get the STEA grant if you are registered as a sole trader.

The resources I mentioned are only available in Ireland. But there should be support in most countries. Remember, Google is your best friend for information!

Resources
For full information on the STEA & BTWEA > Here
Application for STEA form > http://www.welfare.ie/en/pdf/stea1.pdf
How to apply for STEA:
- If you live in an area covered by a local development company (xls) (LDC), apply to the Enterprise Officer.
- If you do not live in an LDC area, apply to the Jobs Facilitator in your social welfare local office.

Etsy Ireland - New Blog Co-Ordinator

BIG HELLO AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS!!!

It's just turned 2014 and I have taken on the blog co-ordinator role for Etsy Ireland. On behalf of the admin team and readers of the blog, I would like to thank Rebecca for all her hard work during her time as Blog Co-ordinator. It will be hard to follow-up on all her great work, but I will give it my best!

Me - Shen Wong

About Me
Born in Hong Kong, my family moved to Ireland when I was a toddler. Within a couple of months here, I won the title of Cutest baby in Drogheda of 1982. After my win, we moved away from the glitz and fame to North Dublin.

Recently I set up my own business selling handmade jewellery via Etsy at Shen Wong Jewellery. Whats sets my work apart is the drive that I have to succeed and be different. 'Wired by Shen' is a jewellery wrapping technique that I developed. This technique is unique to my jewellery, it not only eliminates links between beads, but gives my products a polished finish. Read my press release here.

Etsy Ireland Blog
With the new year, I thought I might added one or two new resources. Before I do, I would like to assess the interest. Let me know if you think either of the below would be of interest. I am open to suggestions and ideas.

 - Markets and opportunities Post
Updated with links to markets and pop-up shops around Ireland

To read my weekly posts, just click on 'Hot Topics' on the left of the page. Starting from next week I will post the following topics. Based on comments and feedback from readers, we will decide on future topics.

Etsy Ireland - New Blog Co-ordinator

A big crafty hello to you all! As you may have noted from Lily's previous post, she has stepped down as blog co-ordinator after a very long and productive spell. A big thank you for all your hard work Lilly and something tells me I have big shoes to fill! (gulp!)

Lets get this show on the road by firstly introducing myself. My name is Rebecca O'Hare and I've been a member of the Etsy Ireland team for a number of years now. I run the paper obsessed Etsy shop and blog LuckyRainbowDesigns, which is currently looking a tad bare as I'm in the process of moving house and if you're addicted to craft supplies like I am, then you'll know that organising and packing up your craft room is a long and laborious task! On top of all that, I'm a stationary addict, craft supply hoarder and dog lover and suffer from blog envy all day, every day!

I'm excited to get stuck into the Etsy Ireland blog, meet and interact with more of you great people, inspire you with some interesting posts and generally get to you know you all a little better while working hard to make the Etsy Ireland blog the best it can be. Most importantly, I'm hoping to help drive more traffic to our wonderful blog and corner of the interweb as well as drive some traffic (and sales) to your individual Etsy shops.

I also hope to shake things up a little blog wise, perhaps work a little on the design side of things, provide a new range of posts and increase our social media profile while collaborating with the other great Etsy Ireland co-ordinators.

Feedback as always is welcome and appreciated so drop me a line if you feel the need to do so! As a social media lover you can contact me on a multitude of platforms.Twitter and Facebook are favs but hey, good ole email will do too! (luckyrainbowdesigns@gmail.com).

Until next time, happy crafting!

We need you!

Hi Everyone

Happy 2013 to you all. Now the holidays are finished Purls & I have decided that we want to start making the Etsy Ireland Team the best team on Etsy and to be able to do that we need to hit the ground running.

So here we go:
We are going to have tutorial type essays and posts, hopefully together with Etsy and the new offices in Dublin. More on that later, but the first series will be about promoting your business. I have written the first article - 'Word of Mouth' - which is on the blog now. I urge you all to check out the blog regularly for all the new things that will be going on. If anyone has anything they would like to write any articles please do get in touch.

  1. Designer Profile Co-ordinator
This was formerly called 'Tea and Chat'. It would seem that there wasn't too much response when Ellen was trying to get people to do it. Probably you were busy but listen up - this is for your own benefit. Customers as well as other team members read the blog and the articles, so it's in your interest to be interviewed. Find the time - please do. We need to get someone to take this project on. Maybe an article once a month - with lots of photos - and you never know it might make to the main Etsy page!
  2. Eyes Open Ireland Co-ordinator
This is the post that has a shop owner interviewed about places they have been and things that they have seen and loved in Ireland. Again perhaps a post that can be done once a month rather than weekly, with lots of photos. Who wants to do this??
  3. Getting to know you Co-ordinator
Etsy Ireland / Meets another Team / Treasury - 50/50 each item. The idea behind this is that we get to know people from other teams and they get to know us. Great promotion. Someone needed please.

  4. Introduction to new team members shops/treasuries
This is what Ellen used to do too. I used to post the new members each week and she used to take an item from each shop. I think this was always popular, so lets have someone volunteering please.
  5. Pinterest Page Co-ordinator
This speaks for itself! We have a Pinterest page now and we need someone to keep it in order.
  6. Flickr Co-ordinator
I am not sure if anyone from our team uses this facility much, but I think we should, because many, many potential customers from other countries use Flickr a lot, particularly in the US. So lets make use of it! Volunteer please.
I just want to say here, that it is quite time consuming being an admin of the team, so please don't volunteer if you won't be able to take on these jobs wholeheartedly. However, if you do offer to help, it is very fulfilling. Also, don't be afraid, Purls & I will help you along the way until you get the hang of things.
Also a really big thank you to everyone who has given up their time in the past and to those on admin who are still giving up their valuable time to help the team!

We have also taken on board your comments and suggestions about promoting the team, setting up shop, more markets and so forth, but this post is already too long, so all of that will be for another time, but very soon!

Please contact me on: sueatkilmeedy@eircom.net if you would like to volunteer for any of the posts mentioned so far.

Lets get this show on the road!
Sue

Crafty News

Flowers at Malone House, South Belfast

Since our Mo is away on a well-deserved holiday and nobody has come forward to step into her shoes for these three weeks, you'll get me, Purls, once more.

And this leads me into the next subject, which is our blog. I am a bit thin on the ground for contributions, so unless you want to read Purls' yarnspinning every day, or have Jacob's growls and scowls for a week, I need to see paws up for the blog.

To show you all how effective our blog is, here is a link to an article by Alice on Fondelifair, which shows clearly that people are reading this blog and that articles translate into visitors to featured shops and author's websites.

This is very good news. Do you need any more persuasion, or do I have to send the bear in???

More crafty news:
  • this weekend, Etsy Ireland's pop-up-shop, organised by Ruth from nicedaydesigns will dazzle visitors during the Cat Dig in Limerick. If you had the good intentions of sending some of your products down, but it went out of your head, check with Ruth whether or not it's too late to send things now.
  • Some of our team members have joined Fondelifair, the new Irish online craft community and marketplace, and we're making ourselves quite at home there while getting to grips with the joys of Word Press. For those who would like to learn and brush up their Word Press skills, this might be the right course for you.
  • The Home Souk and the Fashion Souk are on in Belfast this weekend. Both are taking place in the Europa Hotel from 11am to 5pm (Home Souk is on 14 May, Fashion Souk on 15th)
As always keep an eye on the Year of Craft website for updates countrywide, and tell me of any interesting crafty news happening in your area!

Bloggers wanted!

It is nearly September, the leaves are not yet falling, and our Etsy Ireland blog is doing really well.

Alas, for it to stay that way, we need a few more articles, especially for the sections 'How to Tuesdays' and 'Trade Secrets Thursdays'. Contributions are also always needed for 'Eyes Open Ireland'; and any Introductions and 'I'll Show You Mine' are very welcome!

Or poetry, ideas, suggestions, bear musings... BEAR MUSINGS???

Jacob lets it be known that he will personally write an article himself if nothing is forthcoming, and right now he's making stabbing movements with a pen...

Contact me, Brigitte, at my Etsy Shop if you have any article or idea for this blog, and Bridget at her shop for 'Eyes Open Ireland'.

Etsy Ireland Needs You!

Can you resist those eyes? Jacob, the big Swede (well he does come from a place called Ikea...), is calling on all team bloggers and those who always dreamt of becoming one, to write some exciting stuff for the Etsy Ireland Blog!

We need articles for our sections 'How to Tuesdays', 'Trade Secrets Thursdays' and 'Eyes Open Ireland' in particular, also Introductions and 'I'll Show You Mine', but any ideas are welcome!

Contact me, Brigitte, at my Etsy Shop if you have any article or idea for this blog, and Bridget at her shop for 'Eyes Open Ireland'.

And you never know what will happen when you do put fingers to keyboard... We asked a Ms PO Colour from Belfast:

"Ever since I've written that article for the Etsy Ireland Blog, my sales have increased", she insisted, rattling her knitting needles. "One of my hats was featured in another blog, and I've been asked to go on a radio show."

As you can imagine we were rather intrigued. However, when the excited knitter dropped her balls of wool and while retrieving them muttered something about having found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, been asked on x-factor, and been invited to a candlelit dinner with a certain Mr Craig, we decided that the lady was spinning a bit too much yarn for our liking.

But you never know until you try!
