Get Training - Affordable courses from €10

Training is key to business confidence

This week I will be taking part in a 1 day business course with the Tolka partnership. The introduction to the basics of self employment course for €10 covers:

  • Book Keeping and Taxation
  • Business Structures
  • Managing Your Business
  • Sales and Marketing Tips for the S.M.E.

Previously I have done training courses with the Dublin City Enterprise board for around €15 a day covering Social Media and marketing. The learnings from these courses were invaluable. There are many benefits to attending these courses over finding random information over the internet.

Benefits of local courses:
  • Affordable - Many courses are available for under €40 (some are even free),
  • Interactive - you are encouraged to ask questions,
  • Applicable - Teachings are based on Irish business requirements,
  • Flexibility - there are many dates to choose from,
  • Short - Most courses are only 4-8 hours,
  • Specific - you can find a lot of niche courses.

For me, I'm not confident that my accounts are being maintained properly, so I really want to take a course that will lay everything out clearly for me and answer my questions on the 'minimum standard'. So the introduction to business is the perfect course for me.

I find a lot of crafters also have many questions in various areas across the business, so a local course might be a good option to help teach and therefore provide business confidence.

Check out these options for courses:
  • Dublin City Enterprise - http://www.dceb.ie/Event-Calendar/DCEB-Training-Course
  • Craft Council of Ireland - http://www.ccoi.ie/content/view/173/296/
  • Tolka Partnership - visit the office to check out their range of courses http://www.tap.ie/
1-2- Mentoring is also available with the above.

Have you done any short courses? If so with who and would you recommend them? I would like to add more to the above list.

Design & Craft Council of Ireland - How to register

The Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) is currently undergoing a name change to better reflect the arts they represent. They are now known as the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI).

The DCCoI is the main champion of the craft industry in Ireland, providing information and training while actively promoting crafts. Activities are funded by Enterprise Ireland so you will often see them promoting each other.

Registration with the DCCoI is currently free and I would highly recommend all crafters to join it. For me, membership is a form of recognition and endorsement by an organisation. Recognition with a national craft organisation can make your business look more reliable to the general public.

To apply, simply complete and submit the form below in resources. Your application will then be assessed by a DCCoI panel. You should be notified within the next two months if your application has been successful.

Membership to the DCCoI means a lot to me. On top of obtaining a greater sense of pride for my work due to official recognition, there are also many benefits.

Benefits of DCCoI membership:
  • Trust - Membership with a national organisation can help to instill trust in new customers.
  • Awareness - By inclusion in their members directory, more people may know about your business.
  • Regular e-Zine with information of industry news, training, support and craft markets.
  • SEO - Full membership includes a bio about your business and a link to your website. This is a highly quality link and can improve your page search ranking with Google.

4 Steps to Promote Competitions & Giveaways

Due to Facebook's ease of use and ability for fan interaction, competitions on this platform have become an essential marketing tool for many small businesses. This post outlines how you can get the most out of your competition. These steps can be used across most of the social media platforms, not just Facebook.

1. Build Excitement
Before you even start the competition, promote it in advance. About a week before, announce that you will be running a competition. Get people excited and open to reading your upcoming posts. It is advised to add a picture to all your posts as it will help to grab the attention of your fans.

2. Commence the Games
When announcing your competition, here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Make sure your post is easily legible
Use the first line to describe the post. The following is a good intro as it is tidy and quickly explains what the post is about:
    *** Competition Time ***
  • ALWAYS promote your competition with a picture
Statistics show that posts with images get more engagement. A photo of the prizes is ideal.
  • Add a Tag
When promoting your competition, add relevant tags such as #competition #giveaway #'YourProduct' to the bottom on your post. By adding a tag, you are increasing the chances of your post being seen by people search for particular topics. This works best with Twitter. Don't go overboard with the tagging, we don't want to look desperate.

3. Third Parties
Promote your competition with third parties, this could be with particular forum threads, such as on Boards.ie. Who you promote with, depends entirely on the goals of your competition. If your goal is to advertise your brand and to get as many entries as possible, you should advertise on relevant giveaway websites.

  • Competitions.ie
This is a great website for advertising competitions as it has many Irish followers. The best part is, it's free to advertise. There are paid packages also if required. When I used Competitions.ie back in December 2013, I gained about an additional 200+ fans. Many are 'active' fans, in that they Like, Share and comment on my posts still.

Advertise for free on Competitions.ie

  • Etsy Ireland Blog
Members can promote their competitions with us. On the top right of the page, there is a 'Competitions' tab. If you would like us to include your competition, just convo ShenWongJewellery at her Etsy shop. Be sure to include your competition start and end date, competition details, prizes and a link to your competition.

4. Cross Promotion
Promote your competition across all your own platforms: blog, Etsy shop, Twitter, LinkedIn Google+ etc.
In your Etsy shop, include information about the competition on the introduction section, be sure to add a link to it. You need to sit down and think if there is anywhere else online that you have control over the content, these are potential opportunities for you to spread the word yourself.

Tips

  • Add your logo to your images when posting. As other people share your competition on their walls, their friends may not notice your business name. You want to increase your brand exposure with every given opportunity, so it is important not to miss this chance.
  • Don't forget to promote the competition yourself on your own Facebook profile!
Include Your Brand to Images
When I ran my competition, I used ShortStacked to create an app. By using an app, was was able to 'Fan gate' competition entries, ensuring that people 'Like' my page before entering. If you would like to know more about creating an app, just let me know in a comment.

To follow my activities, you can 'Like' my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ShenWongCo

Hi Team,

We've just received a convo from one of our team members, Emma. A great opportunity for all...

Sue

--------------

Hello Sue,

I'm working at the moment for a theatre and arts festival called "Collaborations", and we are looking for makers of all descriptions to submit work for our exhibition. It's free to take part and is happening in a beautiful space called the Banquet Hall in Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin.

It 's open to all kinds of works and I'd like to have a really good mix. People can find more info and submit applications here collaborations.ie/apply/

Cheers,

Emma.

New Team Course - Starting 2nd Feb 2014

Hi Team,

We are starting a new course, working along with other teams on Etsy.

The course will start on Sunday 2nd February and will take place over the month.

The course will include the following subjects:

- Shop critique and goal setting.

- Photography focus.

- Promotion and Marketing with focus on Social Media.

- Other items required by individuals.

It's a bit like the Holiday Bootcamp course we did, in that participants will be working in pairs, guided by myself and Purls throughout.

This course will be intensive and so you will need to be able to properly commit for your own, and your partners sake.

It will be of great value to new, and established shop owners alike. We never want to stop learning do we?

If you would like to participate, all you need to do at this stage is leave a post under the post in the Discussion Forum,, and we will get in touch with further details.

The more the merrier so please do sign up. It'll be fun as well as intensive so don't panic.

Sue
