Successful Summer Craft Fair

After long preparations, the Summer Etsy Ireland Craft Fair took place on  Sunday 7 June 2015 at The Green Door Market in Dublin 8.

The market opened at 10am for set up, and trading took place from 11am-5pm. The successful event  offered plenty of opportunities of networking and showcasing products. There was live music, too.

We had some new Etsy Sellers at the market, like Laura Chacon with Calligraphy by Laura

Regular members were delighted to make new contacts and sales e.g. Hazel Donnelly

Our thanks go to the organiser Maria from The Crafty Shamrock for the hard work in making the market a success. A lot of work goes into these events, which often is not obvious to the visitors.

Etsy Ireland/Bernard Shaw Craft Fair 27th October Update

Hi Everyone
A bit more info for you about our event at The Bernard Shaw on Saturday 27th October:

  1. John, from The Bernard Shaw, who is doing everything for us is proposing to call it 'The Toejam & Etsy Ireland Minimall'

If no-one has any objections to this, can I tell him to go ahead with that name?
  2. It will be held at 'The Bernard Shaw' Arts & Crafts venue in Dublin City
  3. We are expecting around 500 people to attend the event between 12pm - 6pm with a lot more people being exposed to the promotion via The Bernard Shaw web channels. The Bernard Shaw is very well known for doing craft markets in Dublin, with a savvy crowd etc.
You can check out The Bernard Shaw here:

    https://www.facebook.com/thebernardshaw
    and here:
    http://www.bodytonicmusic.com/thebernardsaw/

  4. Etsy has kindly offered to pay for an 'Etsy Ireland Team' banner and other promo's.
I therefore need to get some pricings urgently so that they can forward the money, so if anyone knows of a company in Dublin that would be able to make one (professionally - so that we can use it again and again) then please do let me  know.
  5. We will be contacting those of you that expressed an initial interest, over the next week, so that we can verify exact numbers of stalls/volunteers etc, in attendance.
  6. If anyone (including new members) would like to attend and you haven't yet emailed me, please do so here sueatkilmeedy@eircom.net. I can't guarantee that you will get in at this stage because we have had a huge response, but I will try and get everyone in.
That is all for now folks, Purls or myself will be in touch over the next week.

Kind Regards
Sue

IMPORTANT - FREE EVENT NOTICE

Hi Everyone

We have been contacted by John from The Bernard Shaw - Bar, Studio & Artspace - (www.thebernardshaw.com) in Dublin. He wants to run a craft fair featuring the Etsy Ireland Team, on Saturday 27th October. The options are as follows:

  • Anyone from the Etsy Ireland Team can go there and set up their own stall, selling for themselves.
  • We could take over the whole marquee and run an 'Etsy Ireland Event', in which case you could attend in person and set up a stall, but in addition we would also need some volunteers to run stalls where the sellers can't get there, but you could post items to be sold, a bit like Ruth did with the 'pop up shop'.
This is a great opportunity for the team and all of it's members who would like to participate because John is providing everything free of charge!

This event has been run before and so it's likely that lots of people would be in attendance.

******************

Here is the email that John sent to us:

'Here is a link to a video of what was the Toejam Carbooty Sale in it's prime a couple of years back:

I used to run that in here once every 6 - 8 weeks and it was super popular and a lot of fun. Since we had to stop the large scale stuff I've done a couple of food fares and smaller markets (called Mini Malls) and I would be looking to run the Etsy show along the same lines. Maybe like 6 - 10 well produced stalls, with food and drink surrounding, run from 12 - 6pm with the market seemlessly becoming an after party, filled full of people, everybody is happy!
For the Mini Mall there is two options. One is that its an Etsy Mini Mall, as in you guys front it and fill the majority, if not all of the stalls, making sure there is a good balance of product on sale. I can fill in around the gaps with food vendors etc. The other option is that there is an Etsy area at The Mini All, you guys could take over a row of tables.
With my promotion deadline looming, (monday!) I would love to be able to say Etsy are 100% in, and then we can work on the details over the next few weeks and months and decide which type of event it is. Would you be able to do that do you think?'

**********************

Ok. At this stage all I need is for those of you who would be interested to contact me with your preferences for the way to go forward. Also if anyone would like to volunteer to run it (with help of course) on behalf of all of us who wouldn't be able to get there please contact me:  sueatkilmeedy@eircom.net

It would be great publicity for the Etsy Ireland Team sellers and Etsy in general. I will put it to the big bods of Etsy and see what publicity we can get from them on the Internet, and John will be doing all the publicity for the event.

I think this is so good of John to want to work with us, and its a fabulous opportunity, so come on everyone - lets support him and ourselves.

Talk to us here or at Sue's email address above quickly - deadline is tomorrow!!!!

A Visit to the National Museum of Decorative Arts, Dublin

On 16th April a few team members got together for an inspiration-seeking visit to Collins Barracks. Home of the National Museum of Decorative Arts, the Barracks holds an impressive collection of decorative silverware, ceramics, furniture, fashions and other historical artefacts.
Mo, Heli, Chiara, Anne-Marie

Those who were able to make it on the day were Mo of Huggle Knits, Heli of Heli Designs, Chiara of Makissima and myself, Anne-Marie of Handmade by Amo’r.

This blog post is intended only to give you a taste of the collection as it is really well worth going along and seeing for yourselves. Apologies for the poor quality of some of the pictures procured from...erm...various unidentified sources.

Like any clothes-mad and crafty girls, we made a bee-line for the permanent exhibition, ‘The Way We Wore’. This is an interesting display following 250 years of Irish fashions and textiles from the late 18th to 20th centuries.

The outfits on display would have been worn by those who were relatively well off and who wore the latest styles.

The detail on this child's coat is simply amazing.

The ankle boots may be couple of centuries old but I wore a fairly similar pair as a kid in the 1980s!

The exhibit hightlights the importance of the fashion and textile industries to the economy. By the turn of the 19th century, Irish textiles such as lace and crochet were already well known and sought after internationally.
The middle and upper classes kept well up with the changing fashions seen across Europe.

The jewellery exhibit revealed a few surprises, especially the pieces from the 18oos. Though there was some use of semi precious stones such as agate and amethyst, 19th century jewellery artisans utilised some unusual materials. This could include bone, human or horse hair and bog oak.
In the early 1800s, black bog oak jewellery and accessories were made to target the tourism industry. I didn’t even know there was an Irish tourism industry as such back then!

The oak, blackened naturally by the acids in the peat bog, is lightweight and perfect for carving delicate and intricate designs. The jewellery usually featured Irishy motifs and symbols like harps and shamrocks.

Sorry vegans, but look away please. These delicately woven, 19th century pieces were made in Youghal, from horse hair dyed red.

I don't think I will be exploring this raw material myself. However, My imagination has been sparked. I for one, will be recycling and upcycling further beyond the beach glass I currently include in my own collections.

The strap on this amber bangle is made from tightly woven human hair! In the 1800s, mourning jewellery was commonly worn by the bereaved. It sometimes featured the hair of a deceased loved one to keep them near. Fascinating, though a little creeeeepy methinks.

This Victorian necklace, was made from 18th and 19th century watch cocks. And I thought the use of cogs, keys etc in Steam Punk jewellery was a modern phenomenon!

We also popped into the temporary exhibit on the work of Neilli Mulcahy. An Irish haute couture designer who ran her own Dublin salon from 1951 to 1969. We were particulalry enamoured by the bags on display.

I'm pretty sure my Mum once had a bag not unlike this one. It ended up in our dressing up box and I loved it.
Can I have this one please????

Neilli was renowned for her use of Irish tweed. She worked with local handweavers to produce lightweight fabrics in vibrant colours.

After a quick stroll through the Irish Country Furniture, Asian art and Out of Storage displays we had a good natter over coffee. There was so much more we didn't have time to see and may go back ourselves for a further look. We certainly got the inspiration we sought. I personally came away with a renewed determination to include more indiginous and recycled materials in my own work.

Watch this private thread for details of future, cultural, arty or craft-related team outings. If you decide to organise one for Crafty Ireland Team members in your own county or city, please take pics and share it with us!

Museum Opening hours: Tues – Sat 10am to 5pm. Sunday 2pm to 5pm.

The Ferocious Mingle Market, A Unique Experience

It’s Halloween all year round at Dublin’s only fancy dress market, the Ferocious Mingle Market! With flea markets and craft fairs enjoying a resurge in popularity, the FMM stands out from the rest as a quirky and fun event.

The market is held the second Sunday each month in the Co-op Building, Newmarket Square, Dublin 8. Stall holders and customers are encouraged to dress up in ‘mild to over-the-top’ fancy dress. Shoppers also have the opportunity to win a cash prize should they unwittingly purchase a pre-selected item, know as ‘The Mingle’. Live music is provided by the fabulous Truly DiVine & Burl Esquire. A Buskers' Corner also provides a stage for musicians, poets, magicians, storytellers, and dancers (performers keep 100% of their hat money.)

If anyone is equipped to make a success of it it’s the organiser, Rainey J Dillon. She has an impressive background in art and business. An artist who studied marketing and finance, she’s done everything from portraiture artist to working on the restoration of a mediaeval town in France, while selling hand crafts in the local brocantes. She also makes OOAK steam punk jewellery.

Not a great fan of outdoor markets, especially with Irish weather, Rainey decided to open an indoor one with a twist. ‘I also really wanted to guarantee myself a regular inside pitch!’ she jokes. There was a free Sunday available at the Co-op building so she seized the opportunity.

Yours truly, aka Handmade by Amo'r

‘But why fancy dress? ‘ I ask, joining in whole-heartedly each month but not fully sure why.

‘’As a child I remember my Da taking me to the markets to see my aunts and uncles who sold at Moore St and at Mother Redcaps ‘’ Rainey replies. ‘’ My Granny was a marketeer and my Great Grandfather sold silks & inks at Dublin's markets. Back then you’d always find CHARACTERS either buying or selling... the woman with the 'big lip', Johnny forty Coats, Bang Bang with his imaginary gun, Snakeman, Wild Hair Harry. These personalities led to stories and chat and a feeling of a community, a comradery. Fancy Dress lends a confidence, diluting shyness to a degree. People tend to chat and laugh more when costume is at play. ‘’

As a new stall holder myself, I tend to agree. It can be a struggle finding the balance between starting a conversation and scaring the browser away. People can’t help but smile or comment on the fancy dress, making it easier to engage without putting the customer on the spot.

Natalie

Several members of the Crafty Ireland Team have taken stalls at the market. Natalie of the Blue Sylph has even entertained with her graceful, tribal-style belly dancing. ‘There's a great vibe’ she says. ‘I love the mix of handcrafted goods and vintage items for sale. ‘

(Camera shy) Judith

Judith of A box for my Treasure comments ‘the effort that some people go to is quite amazing (stall holders AND shoppers) and creates a great atmosphere. The market attracts a pretty diverse group of shoppers - probably more diverse than I’ve seen at other markets where I sell - you’ll find young families; teenagers; college students; women in their 20’s, 30’s and beyond, and even the odd male! As it’s a relatively new market I haven’t found it to be super busy yet, but it has lots of potential.'

Tanya of The Happy Heart Place (TanyaMac)and Mary of A Wish for You sporting angel wings.

Only 5 months old, the market is gradually building momentum and has had some exposure in the media. ‘The market will be what it will be.' says Rainey. 'It will evolve the way it is meant to. As a stall holder I can see it getting busier each month. As a 'seasoned' stall holder and retailer I expect the 'lulls' and so this does not shake my confidence in the market. ‘

The next fantastical Ferocious Mingle Market will be taking place on 14th November. Fabulous fun is planned and there is always something new! With 45 stalls, free parking and a scrummy coffee shop, there's something for everyone. For more info and /or to apply for a stall visit the website.

An Opportunity To Exhibit at Showcase Ireland 2011.

Do you want to sell wholesale? Do you want to find more outlets? Do you want to promote your work to a wider audience? Do you want to help Etsy Ireland's exposure?

I'm in the process of trying for a stand for Etsy Ireland members at Showcase Ireland in Dublin in the RDS in January 2011. The application forms are out now and it's a first come first served basis so we have to be quick! The cost is 275 euro per square metre and the smallest stand is 4 square metres, so the stand is expensive if you were to go it alone. But as a group we can split the costs so it would be more affordable.

I have to email the organiser with details of what we'd have in our stand so I need to know who is interested asap. The organiser will then let me know if it is possible to take a stand as a group and we will proceed from there.

The event is wholesale orders only, no selling straight to the public, it is purely to get your work into outlets.

If you are interested please email me at bridgetfarmerprints[at!]hotmail.com as soon as you can with details and images of what you would take to Showcase Ireland.

If we get a stand the next step will be to meet up and discuss how our stand will look, order or make business cards, make display etc. I think this will be an excellent opportunity for anyone taking part.

See here for more information about Showcase Ireland

There is also the possibility of getting an etsy team grant so it wont be as expensive, I'll look into that.

I'll show you mine...

Hello and welcome to the studio of Little White Dog. I'm Suzie and that ball of white fluff trying to charm the socks off you is my dog, Milo, who keeps me company while I work.

I'm still pretty excited about my studio because I've only moved in recently. I live in a tiny cottage where space is pretty tight, and I used to work at one end of a desk (The Messy End) while my husband, Gareth, worked on his computer at the other end (The Tidy End). All my crafty bits and pieces were in boxes on top of the wardrobe and I was spending a lot of time standing on a chair rummaging for ribbons and paper etc. I won't even go into the details of the War of the Cardboard which involved me squirreling away cardboard & packing boxes behind/under/in the wardrobe and Gareth subtly relocating it to the recycling bin when I wasn't looking!

So when my parents suggested I use their spare room as a studio I jumped at the chance, and before I knew it Gareth was enthusiastically helping me pack my boxes into the car. A trip to IKEA for some desks, shelves and boxes, and a day or two of assembly later my studio was ready to go. A throw and some nice cushions made a bed into a daybed - perfect for sitting and sewing, for visitors to sit and chat, or for Milo to snooze on (mostly for Milo to snooze on, in fact!).

I'm a bit of a magpie so I have lots of boxes filled with pieces of material, ribbons, different kinds of paper, cut outs from magazines and some things that defy classification that end up in a box with “bits & pieces” on the label. I can't resist pretty paper and at the moment I'm experimenting with lots of different types of vintage and scrapbook papers for making my 3D letters & boxes.

My ideas for the things I make often begin as gift ideas for my friends and family, and they usually occur to me at about 2am. They tend to start out really simple and snowball into something hideously complicated before ending up relatively simple and a little bit different. If I ever have an inspiration drought I'll have notebooks full of scribbles to fall back on! I think my training as an architect leads me to design things that are functional as well as looking attractive: my iPhone cases may be made of pretty ribbon but the ribbon is also a handstrap, and my 3D letters can also be used as little boxes. I like surprises, secret compartments and things that have to be figured out, so that tends to come out in my designs too.

I work at two desks and I tend to switch between them a lot during the day. One has all the computer equipment where I draw and print templates for a lot of my designs, and the other is for the more hands on work like cutting out and assembling.

My window looks out over the park behind the house, where Milo takes me for walks, and beyond that I have a pretty spectacular view over Dublin City. I feel unbelievably lucky to have such a great space to work in. If I'm dreaming please don't wake me up, I like it here! I think Milo would like to bring you out to the garden for a game of fetch now, but if you'd like to see more of my work you can visit my website www.littlewhitedog.ie Thanks for visiting!
