Wish List

'Flow' card by Mindful Productivity on Etsy

As some of you know, I am involved in politics, and with the General Election in the UK on 7 May, fairly busy. Yesterday, the Labour Party released a document on improving access for young people to the creative education they need and succeed. It also talked about the creative industries, and how important they are for the country.

“If you believe in social justice, if you believe in a more equal society, then access to the arts and culture is not an optional extra, it is essential - not simply because of the worlds it opens up, but because of the wider impact it has." *

It made me think about how I did not enjoy any arts and craft education in school, because the teachers mainly focused on the ones who they saw as very talented and gifted, and the rest fell by the wayside, left to muddle around unappreciated. The pure enjoyment of art, creativity and craft –if you weren’t on genius level – was not seen as important. It was always about this grand outcome, this exceptional piece – and exceptional is often in the eye of the beholder, here the teacher – never about 'worlds opening up' or the moment of ‘flow’ ie when you forget everything and are just involved in creating something, and sort of...well, float on a cloud of bliss!

I find that when running a creative business, it’s a bit like that, too. You try to produce, and anything handcrafted takes time, so you focus on getting things done, and the lovely feeling of flow falls by the wayside. I knit on the hoof, during meetings, watching TV, and while my computer is uploading something, but only when I am not at home, for instance, when travelling by train and in no rush to do anything else but knit and look out of the window and drink coffee, do I get my flow back.

So it is hard to just live in your happy craft flow when you are running a business and trying to make a living. You may feel like you are battling against the world or closed doors, rather than worlds opening up.

Coming back to the political, I wonder what you – the reader – would love to see done by a government – any government – to improve our playing field as a creative (often one person-) business? What would be the one - or more – thing/s, that you want a government done for small independent creative businesses? The thing that open doors?

Then maybe, we would get our flow back more often...

Tell us your wish list in the comments!

Mo:
Hello ladies and thank you all for coming forward to be interviewed for this month's Profile Collection.  Can I start by asking each of you to introduce yourselves.

C:
Hi Mo, my name is Carinne Meyerink (EilishTree).   I am Australian with a Dutch background and have lived in Ballina, Co Mayo for almost 4 years.

M:
My name is Maria Ryan (Lollipops and Daydreams) and I live in Carlow with my family.

Y:
My name is Monika (COCOYOstore) but my artistic nickname is Yolk.  I am from Poland and I live in Dublin.

Cat and Girl Print from COCOYOstore
Mo:
A truly international grouping of creators living in different parts of Ireland.   How did you get started?

C:
I have always loved sewing and made my first doll about 15 years ago.  Then when I came to Ireland I joined with a group of local crafters and sold some of my creations at a Christmas Craft Fair.  After that I set up my shop on Etsy and now hope to combine it with further craft fairs.

M:
My background is in finance but I always had a love for sewing and interior design.  Then a few years ago I wanted to get some bunting for my children's room and couldn't find anything I liked within my budget so I bought a sewing machine and some fabric and it grew from there.

Y:
For some years I have been working with animations and illustrations in the virtual world and needed to get back to the pencil and paper of my youth.  To the smell of paint and ink, to having my hands dirty, to cut outs!  So I bought some equipment and started the next part of my journey.

Mo:
Do you have a typical day?

C:
I have 4 children so I sew between school runs, music lessons, sports, making dinner, washing clothes etc. - not unlike a lot of mums out there. My husband is very supportive and as he works from home I sometimes get bigger chunks of time to create.

M:
I too have young children and after the school run in the morning I do a quick check online -email, etsy, facebook - then its fabric cutting and sewing until school is over.  I start again after 8 in the evening for a few hours which suits me as I am a night person!!  I also have help with the children other days when I need to do a lot of sewing.

Y:
I start my day by feeding my 2 kittens, Sherman and Mako.  Following my morning exercise I sit and create.  I love the freedom to be able to make what I like.  As well as nursery prints I also make soft toys.

Mo:
Busy ladies.  What are your future ambitions?

C:
My superhero dolls have proved to be very popular so I will continue with them.  I have decided to expand into selling patterns for my dolls and am working on other designs including a monster rag doll and a smaller one with inter-changeable cloths, a bit like a cloth barbie.....

M:

I hope to expand into fabric design and design more little girl dresses.  My ultimate goal is to have a complete range of children's wear.

Y:

While I continue to make my nursery prints and toys I am dreaming of having a small studio where a group of women could work together and support each other with ideas and experience.

Mo:
Do you have any designers, crafters etc. that you follow and get inspiration from?

C:
I  really like the paintings of Lindy Longhurst on Etsy because they are bright, bold and based on myths and fairy tales. Also Sarah Jane's blog is great with some excellent free tutorials to use with her fabrics.

M:

I love to see what other crafters make and I love Pinterest for that.  I also follow a number of bloggers - Tori Jayne for example.  The online support network is so important when you mostly work on your own.

Y:

I love rummaging through the resources of Pinterest too.  Its an amazing treasury.  My greatest role model would have to be Uli Meyer and his studio of animation where I was fortunate to work.  Also I just love the beauty of everyday life.

Mo:
We have loads to look forward to from you all.  In the meantime, do you have any advice for new crafters?

C:
Enjoy making first, don't always think about your target audience or selling.  Just enjoy the creative process!

M:

My first piece of advice is to persevere, keep growing with your skills and learning. Also register for tax and don’t expect to make a profit straight away!! Believe in yourself, have patience and you will get there!

Y:

Do what you love and be open to the beauty around you.

Mo:
Thank you all so much for taking part in the interview and sharing with us. You have such a range of wonderful work,  and all so different.  Very inspirational.  Now all we need know is how to find you, the links to your shops etc

C:

Hi! Anne-Marie of Handmade by Amo'r here with this month's Getting To Know You post.
The idea is to introduce the Etsy Ireland Team to another Etsy team via a 50-50, cross-team treasury.

I was admiring wood crafted art and wooden items by team members this month so went in search of a team devoted to working with this beautiful material.

I knew Ireland was once covered mainly in Oaklands, but I got curious as to what trees are indigenous to Ireland.
4000 year old Irish Bog Oak key chain by Stickman- Hold a piece of ancient history in your hand FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING
4000 year-old bog oak keychain by Mayfly Etsy Shop
By the time man settled here about 9000 years ago, much of the land was covered in trees, principally oak in the valleys and lowlands. Mountains and other areas of poor soil were mainly covered with pine with small populations of birch. Alder took another century to really take hold and ash did not become common for a further 2000 years.

Forest Figure- Small landscape

Native trees are those which had already taken root before sea levels rose and Ireland became an island. Besides these mentioned, other native trees include willow, hazel and rowan.  After we were separated from Great Britain and mainland Europe by rising oceans, non-native specimens of tree continued to arrive, brought here by seafaring humans.
The Druidess of the Yew Grove - Artist Signed Print
The Druidess of the YewGrove by Eye of a Druidess
Yew once grew very abundantly and seemingly, this was the one much used by carpenters and wood turners through the centuries, especially for domestic vessels. It is apparently, one of the more difficult woods to work with, requiring great skill and fine tools.

Let's wish every success to the Wood Art Team and our own, native carpenters, wood turners and woodworking artisans who keep this ancient craft alive.

Crafty Inspirations for the New Year

2013 Illustrated Calendar - Makissima
2013 art calendar by Makissima
HAPPY NEW YEAR to all team members and craft lovers. Anne-Marie of Handmade by Amo'r here. I'd like to share a few inspirational ideas for the start of 2013.
A NOD TO 'THE GATHERING'
One of the most significant happenings in Ireland this year is of course The Gathering, a year-long celebration of Ireland, homecoming events and the Irish Welcome. Perhaps we can come up with small ways we can individually, and/or as a team, celebrate with Irish Etsy people abroad?
Green Claddagh Ring Irish Language Card

For instance, I came across this team ‘Auld Irish Artisans’ on Etsy. They are a group of Irish and non-Irish Etsians who love all things about Ireland. A simple idea would be to make cross-team treasuries under the theme and tag of 'The Gathering' to extend a greeting to them. Anyone could do this as an individual member of the team at any time during the year. The more who do it, the merrier! (Don’t know how to make a treasury? See links below for help).

Seaglass Fairy Suncatcher, Christmas Ornament, Rear View Mirror Charm or Pendant

Another idea might be to team up with Irish Etsians abroad for mini projects. In 2012 I have been fortunate to make ‘cyber friendships’ with Irish descendants abroad via treasuries, as customers and also through lucky encounters such as with American Irish girl, Joy of Seaglass Lass.  Joy sought some Irish seaglass and I got the chance to experiment with drilled pieces she sent me in exchange. To read about our crafty swap please see link at end of article. Perhaps it will spark ideas for swaps and projects between us and Irish Etsians around the world. Please do post any further ideas that may occur to you in the comments below!

In terms of creativity, The Gathering may also provide inspiration for friendship bracelets, mementos, Irish gifts, greeting cards and so on. The possibilities abound.

NETWORKING
Having tentatively networked through the team forums, making treasuries, contributing to this blog, and via the few team meetings I have been able to attend, I have been lucky to find some crafty friends. On a  few occasions I have extended open invites for inspirational/cultural outings for a more relaxed, social meet-up with local team members. Born out of this, I have made two very supportive friends in Mo of Huggleknits and Heli of Heli Creations  and we continue to meet up ourselves on a regular basis for a crafty chat and a day out.

Mo & Heli at the National Botanic Gardens
We’ve had fun beach combing, hill walking, taking photos at the National Botanical Gardens and visiting places of cultural interest such as the Chester Beatty Library. We always come away with fresh inspirations, feedback on our newest creations and a helpful tip or two.  We also promote each other's shops when we post photos of our trips on our blogs or on Facebook. Hopefully in 2013 we will get to go a little further afield and meet other Etsy friends for a day out.

Sticking your neck out to network and meet up can be daunting but I've found it very rewarding.
Why not use the team forums and/or this blog to make contact with team members in your town or area in a similar way?  It's always good to make new crafty friends - and to promote each other too!

GET INVOLVED
On a larger scale, why not make 2013 the year to be more active in the Crafty Ireland team?  Please read the post below from our Team Captain, Sue, calling for volunteers. The roles are filling up fast so don't hesitate! Getting involved is a great way to network and to give something back. According to Etsy Admin, team members who are more active within a team tend to do better saleswise too!

 JANUARY SPECIFIC
January is the month for new beginnings, new hobbies, resolutions and early Spring Cleaning. It’s a good time to sell de-stash or set up that supply shop you’ve been thinking about. Why not match your needs to clear out overstock of supplies with someone else’s new hobby and sell your de-stash at a fair, but tempting price?
