Leaving the old year behind...

The Christmas tree is still sparkling, but the turkey is eaten and the presents are hopefully already in use. Yes, with a blink of an eye, Christmas has gone, and the New Year is knocking at the door. What does it mean for the crafters of Etsy Ireland? Are you relaxing, making business plans for the next year, having a sale, preparing for the New Year's Eve party or are you already having a beady eye on Valentine's Day and Spring?

If you are planning to become a more active team member, why not consider volunteering for a team position? Take a look at this announcement, and raise your hand, sewing or knitting needle, crochet hook, glue gun or pliers and make next year's team a great one!

Wishing you all a very Happy 2011!

Tea and a Chat: Anne-Marie from byAMOR

Hi everyone!  Been a bit of a delay with the old Tea and a Chat series but we're back on track this week with Anne-Marie from byAMOR.  Anne-Marie is our current blog host, even though she say's she's not a big blogger...I think she's just modest!

Anyway, here we go;

Tell us a bit about what you do?
Mostly, I bead and wire wrap.  My Etsy shop began with gemstone jewellery but I enjoy exploring new techniques and product lines.  Some of these ‘experiments’ make it into the shop, some do not. I now make bookmarks, eyeglass chains, Christmas ornaments and key chains etc as well as gemstone and Irish beach glass jewellery.

I fell in love with wire wrapping undrilled beach glass when I bought a bunch from Iris O’Connor.  Now I can’t go to a beach without getting a crick in my neck from looking down!  Generally, I prefer not to have a pre-planned design but to let the nuances of the glass dictate how to go. I t’s hugely satisfying to discover the hidden shapes in each shard.

If you weren’t a crafty type, what would you be doing?
This is a very poignant question for me.  I rediscovered a forgotten love of craft a few years ago after an aneurysm burst, changing my life forever.  At the time I was a Team Leader in one of the most exciting places to work; Guinness Storehouse.  It was a tough decision to give up a job I was passionate about, but I found a quieter, part time job in admin.

However, something was missing. I felt a terrible itch to create.  I picked up my Mum’s paint brushes but it’s not like riding a bicycle, you do need to keep up your skills!  Somehow I ended up teaching myself to bead and wrap.  It’s amazing to think that after the aneurysm I couldn’t fasten the clasp of my watch nor concentrate to read a book.  Aside from frequent headaches, I’ve made a truly remarkable recovery. I believe that the focus required to craft and to run an internet shop contributed to the high degree of recovery.  Without creativity, I think I’d be lost.

Give us some of your favourite designers/fashion peeps:
If I had the spare cash to splash out on big designer labels...I wouldn’t. I’d pack the entire contents of my wardrobe off to Ruth of Nicedaydesigns and ask her to go wild with the scissors and thread.

I also like the asymmetry of the Spanish brand, Desigual.
http://www.desigual.com/desigual/index.jsp?storeId=store_es&locale=en_ES

Any amazing blogs that you’d like to share?
Though I contribute regularly to this blog, I’m not a big blogger.  I don’t even have my own set up yet.  I dip in and out of team members’ blogs though.

What are your top 5 films of all time?

Burn after Reading
The Sixth Sense
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Gene Wilder version...sorry Johnny Yummy Depp.)
Benny and June (speaking of Yummy Depp)
Most of Pedro Almodovar’s work

What was your mother always right about?
We have to make our own mistakes before we realise that our Mum’s were right about most things.  One of my Mum’s mantras was ‘it’ll all turn out right in the end.’ I sometimes forget this ...until I realise in hindsight that I worried over nothing.

Lastly some linky goodness, where can we find you?

Talk to you next time,

Dublin Meet Up....Canned!

Hi Everyone!

Just a quick one to say that due to the busy time of year and people's availability the Dublin meet up for the 11th of December (Saturday) will be reconvened to the new year!  I will pop up another post after Christmas to see what everyone's availability is like!

Have a good break!

Angela

New Staff: Volunteers wanted.

Yes, it's that time of the year again...Letizia and I are handing over the reigns of Etsy Ireland since our six months are nearly up.

It feels like yesterday since we started, but unless we use a time turner...

...that time won't be coming back!

The last six months have been an exciting time - the team has grown, we had some great meetings, and wonderful treasuries and competitions. Thanks to all the post-holders who put their hearts into their roles and made them a success.

So, we are now looking for volunteers for the team positions listed below. Although the Team Admin and Blog Co-ordinator positions - which are the two main roles in the team - rotate every six months, present occupants of other positions can put their hands up again (or go for another post, of course).

So be brave, stick your hand in the air and yes! Working for the Etsy Ireland Team is great fun and very rewarding! Don't be frozen stiff like this plant...

...at the sheer thought of volunteering!

The posts:

Team Admin (rotated every 6 months)
  • responsible for making newcomers welcome and passing on links (facebook/flickr/blog...)
  • encourage members to tag items correctly with 'craftyirelandteam'
  • add new shops to Shop Directory on blog
  • add new members to the Crafty Ireland team page
  • be on hand for general queries from new and existing members
  • email the New Member Admin weekly with the names of new members for inclusion in the 'Welcome' post on the blog

Blog Co-ordinator (rotated every 6 months)

  • work with the 'blog hosts' to provide daily content on the blog
  • create a blog timetable/ calendar through shared docs, for instance Google Calendar
  • write articles, especially when there are gaps in the schedule
  • edit submitted articles if necessary
  • deal with minor technical glitches on the blog
  • add blog hosts/ regular contributors as blog authors to the blog so that they can publish their articles themselves
  • encourage members to submit content, this involves mentioning the blog in the team forums and to new members, as well as publishing calls for new content on the blog regularly
  • co-operate with the Blog Designer to have regular design changes
  • be the contact person for the blog and respond to queries

New Member Admin for 'Welcome' updates
  • announce new members publicly on the blog (Member Update) once weekly email is received from Team Admin: this involves visiting each new member's shop, getting a pic and title of a current item, creating the collage or composite graphic of that week's members and then getting a slot from the Blog Co-Ordinator to do the Welcome post

Blog Designer

This is a new role for somebody who loves playing with designs, images and blog themes:
  •  coming up with a new (seasonal) design regularly and working on it with the Blog Co-Ordinator
  •  checking that all the links and widgets look tidy, are still functioning, and fit with the design

Blog Hosts

Responsible for assisting Blog Co-Ordinator in maintaining a complete blog schedule and help fill gaps where necessary. There are regular hosts and hosts who don't have a weekly slot.

Regular hosts (publish once a week) wanted for:

'Crafty News Update' (at present on Mondays)

Host will announce upcoming craft fair details, events, shop promotions/giveaways on members' behalf. This feature will act as a noticeboard for the team but its success depends entirely upon the participation of members.

'Treasuries' (at present on Wednesdays)

The Treasury Curator will be the contact person for all treasury makers in the team and will publish blog posts with screenshots and links to active treasuries which feature Etsy Ireland team members. Also will publish regular treasury competitions.

'Fab 5 on Friday'

Host will be responsible for sourcing members to participate. Each week a different member will select their Fab 5 and pass onto host for blogging. If there are gaps, the host will select the Fab 5.

'Tea and a chat with' (published on Saturdays)

Fun, friendly member interview blogged by host - also responsible for sourcing contributors. This feature doesn't have to be a weekly one - this term it was published every fortnight.

'Eyes Open Ireland'
(published on Sundays)

The host publishes snapshots/ photographs from members. This feature doesn't have to be a weekly one.

Blog Hosts without a regular slot:

Submit articles regularly and help the Blog Co-Ordinator to fill gaps.

New: Facebook Admin

Checks and updates our Etsy Ireland team facebook page regularly and replies to queries.

PR Team/Think Tank (long term role for 3 - 5 members)

This term the Think Tank didn't get off the ground properly, but this is a team effort by a bunch of proactive creative thinkers and most importantly 'doers' to help generate publicity for the team, online and offline. This includes writing press releases, organising team promotions and publicising the team at events or organising publicity events for the team. The Think Tank works closely with the Team Admin and Blog Co-Ordinator.

The Think Tank is also responsible for applying for team grants and informing the team of progress via blog, facebook, twitter, Crafty Ireland Team forums, and Etsy chat room.

Area Representatives:

Represent your Area! Hosting a team meeting is a great way to do that! We need reps for
Dublin, Belfast, Galway, Limerick and Cork. If there is a significantly large group of Etsy Ireland team members elsewhere, do let the Team Admin know and discuss where to set up meetings for said group!
Each rep will be responsible for setting up meeting time/location and inviting members in your locality to come along. No big agenda! Just meet up, chat, show off your latest makes, maybe have a craft supply swap and have fun. We’d love each rep to blog after each meeting with some photos and a little summary of what you all got up to!

********

Right, so it's now up to you! The posts are not set in stone - each volunteer will make the role their own in some way. And you're not just thrown into the deep end. Letizia and I, and previous post-holders will help the new volunteers to find their feet.

Leave a comment below if you're up for it. Go on! Go on, we know you want to! You will, you will, you will!

Volunteers so far:

Web Designer: Maggie (thebowmakers)
Crafty News: Mo (huggleknits)
Eyes Open Ireland: Rach (balanced)
Fab Five: Beth (magpieandbutton)
New Members' welcome: Letizia (ooakie)

How to knit a baby jumper

Today's How to comes from MrsMouse just in time for the wintry weather! Enjoy!

Last night, I was talking knitting with a friend. We're both late twenty-somethings, I have been knitting most of my life, she's recently come to it through her Grandmother's persistence that she should experience the joy of making something for her new baby (her first).

So far, my friend has enjoyed knitting scarves, but is unsure both on casting off and is put-off by the overwhelming nature of patterns.

This is the set of instructions (rather than a potentially more overwhelming pattern) I designed for her in order to make a jumper for her baby. These instructions should work on most children from birth (including preemie babies) to two years and may also work up to three for some children.

I have referred to the baby as "her" throughout, but the same instructions should work for a boy baby just as well.

To begin with, there's one tricky part - measuring the baby! You need 4 measurements:

1) For the width of the jumper you can pretty much just measure the waistband of one of her nappies and add 5cm each side.

2) Then you need the measure from her armpit to as long as you want (if you go to kind of mid thigh she'll still fit it when you've made it).

3) Next you want the measure of her shoulder to her middle fingertip if you can get it (if not go to her wrist and add 5cms).

4) Last, you want to measure the width of the cuff of the coat she's in now (will be about the same as the next size up for her in jumpers).

Once you've got those four measurements, it's dead easy:

Pattern

a) Cast on enough stitches to get the width of the jumper.
If you want to, you can do 2-3cms of rib (k1,p1 along each row) or you can just knit in stocking stitch all the way up as per a scarf.

b) Keep going until it's the length of measurement 2.

c) If you have an even number of stitches, work out where the middle 4 are. If you have an odd number, it's 3.

On this next row, when you get to the middle 3 (or 4) cast them off. (Have put a note at bottom how to do this) Then keep going to the end of the row.

d) At the end of the row, cast on enough new stitches to get measurement 3.

e) Work just on this one sleeve (you can either just forget you have the others on the needle or grab a spare so you don't have to use the one they're on) until it's half the length of measurement 4. (or the nearest row heading towards the middle at about that point).

f) On this next row, when you get to the stitches that make the body part of the jumper (it should've started looking like a T shape by now so you should be able to tell which ones are sleeve and which are body) only knit half the body stitches and cast off the others (note at bottom). Cut off the yarn leaving a tail (easier to tidy up later).

g) Go back and make the other sleeve the same way.

h) When you get to this point, cut off the yarn so you leave a tail hanging (easier to tidy up later) and can start the yarn back at the beginning of the whole row again (both sleeves are now a whole row)

i) Work across one sleeve, then cast on as many stitches as you cast off at the neck edge, then work across the other sleeve.

j) knit all these stitches until the sleeve is the length of measurement 4.

k) Next row: Cast off the sleeve stitches, knit across the body section, cast off the sleeve stitches on the other side (note on casting off at end).

l) work the remaining stitches until this body panel is the same length as measurement 1 & cast off (note at end).

NB - If you go for the rib waistband at the start, you really need to do the same at the end too.

Fold the whole thing in half and sew the sides.

Casting off: (Called binding off in some patterns)

Knit first two stitches. Focusing just on those two stitches on their own needle, catch the back one and bring it over the one in front and drop it off the end of the needle. It should pull tight on the one that's left (but not too tight). Knit one more stitch and repeat. Keep repeating all the way across.

I quite like to add a blanket-stitch around the edge for decoration, but that's just my taste. You can easily visit sites such as ravelry.com, Youtube.com, or Facebook.com for free guides on how to decorate your knitting, with everything from stripes, to decorative embroidery. This can also seem overwhelming at first, I know, but once you've made your garment, it really is worth making the effort to make it look exactly as you pictured in your mind's eye, whether that's plain, or patterned.
