The Ferocious Mingle Market, A Unique Experience

It’s Halloween all year round at Dublin’s only fancy dress market, the Ferocious Mingle Market! With flea markets and craft fairs enjoying a resurge in popularity, the FMM stands out from the rest as a quirky and fun event.

The market is held the second Sunday each month in the Co-op Building, Newmarket Square, Dublin 8. Stall holders and customers are encouraged to dress up in ‘mild to over-the-top’ fancy dress. Shoppers also have the opportunity to win a cash prize should they unwittingly purchase a pre-selected item, know as ‘The Mingle’. Live music is provided by the fabulous Truly DiVine & Burl Esquire. A Buskers' Corner also provides a stage for musicians, poets, magicians, storytellers, and dancers (performers keep 100% of their hat money.)

If anyone is equipped to make a success of it it’s the organiser, Rainey J Dillon. She has an impressive background in art and business. An artist who studied marketing and finance, she’s done everything from portraiture artist to working on the restoration of a mediaeval town in France, while selling hand crafts in the local brocantes. She also makes OOAK steam punk jewellery.

Not a great fan of outdoor markets, especially with Irish weather, Rainey decided to open an indoor one with a twist. ‘I also really wanted to guarantee myself a regular inside pitch!’ she jokes. There was a free Sunday available at the Co-op building so she seized the opportunity.

Yours truly, aka Handmade by Amo'r

‘But why fancy dress? ‘ I ask, joining in whole-heartedly each month but not fully sure why.

‘’As a child I remember my Da taking me to the markets to see my aunts and uncles who sold at Moore St and at Mother Redcaps ‘’ Rainey replies. ‘’ My Granny was a marketeer and my Great Grandfather sold silks & inks at Dublin's markets. Back then you’d always find CHARACTERS either buying or selling... the woman with the 'big lip', Johnny forty Coats, Bang Bang with his imaginary gun, Snakeman, Wild Hair Harry. These personalities led to stories and chat and a feeling of a community, a comradery. Fancy Dress lends a confidence, diluting shyness to a degree. People tend to chat and laugh more when costume is at play. ‘’

As a new stall holder myself, I tend to agree. It can be a struggle finding the balance between starting a conversation and scaring the browser away. People can’t help but smile or comment on the fancy dress, making it easier to engage without putting the customer on the spot.

Natalie

Several members of the Crafty Ireland Team have taken stalls at the market. Natalie of the Blue Sylph has even entertained with her graceful, tribal-style belly dancing. ‘There's a great vibe’ she says. ‘I love the mix of handcrafted goods and vintage items for sale. ‘

(Camera shy) Judith

Judith of A box for my Treasure comments ‘the effort that some people go to is quite amazing (stall holders AND shoppers) and creates a great atmosphere. The market attracts a pretty diverse group of shoppers - probably more diverse than I’ve seen at other markets where I sell - you’ll find young families; teenagers; college students; women in their 20’s, 30’s and beyond, and even the odd male! As it’s a relatively new market I haven’t found it to be super busy yet, but it has lots of potential.'

Tanya of The Happy Heart Place (TanyaMac)and Mary of A Wish for You sporting angel wings.

Only 5 months old, the market is gradually building momentum and has had some exposure in the media. ‘The market will be what it will be.' says Rainey. 'It will evolve the way it is meant to. As a stall holder I can see it getting busier each month. As a 'seasoned' stall holder and retailer I expect the 'lulls' and so this does not shake my confidence in the market. ‘

The next fantastical Ferocious Mingle Market will be taking place on 14th November. Fabulous fun is planned and there is always something new! With 45 stalls, free parking and a scrummy coffee shop, there's something for everyone. For more info and /or to apply for a stall visit the website.

Pop-Up Shop in Dublin City Centre

Hi Everyone!

Just a quick one; the Dublin members had talked about organising a pop-up shop in Dublin city center for December to make a few quid during the Christmas rush.  There are a couple of properties that may be a goer.
One that needs a bit of love on South Anne Street that is pretty reasonable;

http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?id=41463#email_anchor

And a few possibilities in the Hibernian Walk Way.

http://www.myhome.ie/commercial/brochure/retail-units-royal-hibernian-way-dawson-street/205598

I have spoken to the agents for these properties (and lots of others!) and they seem to think that their client may be receptive to a short one month lease.  So before I go back to them, I need to know who is definitely able to commit to the month of December and would you be happy to commit to pay say EUR100 per week plus split the cost of insurance (not sure what this cost would be).

I think if there were 6 - 8 of us we could cover the costs without too much trouble.

Thanks,

Angela (a.k.a. artysmarty)

Introducing Designbirdie

Hi Fellow Etsians! I’m Mandi Cromer – these days also known as Designbirdie. I’m a freelance illustrator with a background in Animation and Children’s Educational Software and in my spare time I have loved getting stuck into running my Etsy Shop.

I have two gorgeous kids – Ruby and Isak - who are still mini - so designing and making often takes place around my kitchen table, rather than my studio that I share with my Graphic Designer other half, Phil.

All of my illustrations and designs are inspired by daily life - the stories, patterns, findings that I bump into everyday... and I keep a sketch pad handy (good old visual diaries, you can’t beat them!) and everything of interest goes into them.

An idea will constantly sit in my head until I try it – it doesn’t seem to go away! And I have a weird sense of humour – I’ve always been fond of playing with words and interpreting objects differently.

Starting an Etsy shop has been a real eye opener for me. The one thing I’ve found so interesting about Etsy is trend watching – I never really did that before and find it challenges me and pushes me to try new things. I’m finding that through Designbirdie I’m actually revisiting some of the techniques and interests of my college projects 15 years ago, which I'm loving! And I've always had a passion for affordable, original art - and Etsy allows that to be a reality for shoppers and sellers.

I just want to add that I have been blown away by the Etsy Ireland Blog. I find it informative, inspiring and very supportive. I feel if I were to bump into a lot of you at craft fairs that we’d chat like old friends! That’s got to be good!

Tea and a Chat: Ruth from Nice Day Designs

It's starting to get really cold now, so you'll definitely need to get a nice warm cup of tea while you read about our Limerick Rep. and blog host for 'New to Etsy', Ruth. Take it away...

Tell us a bit about what you do?
Hi this is Ruth from Nice Day Designs and Nice Day Supplies, and I do a little bit of everything! Primarily I have a stall at the Milk Market 3 days a week where I sell handcrafts like felt brooches, pocket mirrors, badges, felt pincushions and handmade cards. For the past few years I've also been making a range of quirky recycled clothes, but due to time constraints and only having 24hrs in the day, I just sell them in just one venue-Roisin's Boutique in Inistioge. Last year I also started selling a large amount of vintage buttons/sewing supplies online and at markets, a way of making a few quid out of my insatiable button addiction. Lastly I just started making custom made badges and pocket mirrors in bulk for musicain, clubs and party favours. I've also been known to do my fair share of painting, illustration and graphic design. Once I'm doing something creative I'm happy!

If you weren’t a crafty type, what would you be doing?
As you can see from the above answer I've tried out a multitude of areas within art and craft and I can't imagine it not being a part of my life. When I was younger I toyed with the idea of being a writer, but I don't think I would have been as good at it, or as happy.

Give us some of your favourite designers/fashion peeps:
Even though I work in fashion I'm a disaster when it comes to knowing names and brands, it's always felt foreign to me as an idea. I'm mostly inspired by the small details in the clothes of everyday people, and how they show their own sense of style. I'm a big fan of the beauty to be found in the minutae of the mundane.

Eczema, Ingrown Hairs, Zits; Natural Treatments From Your Kitchen

Anne-Marie of byAmor here, sidetracking slightly from handmade into homemade, with quick, natural solutions to perk up your winter skin. It's not just for girls. So boys, if you wouldn’t be caught dead in Boots with anything other than deodorant in your basket, I have a few secrets for you too for those ingrown hairs, eczema and other little nuisances. No-one need ever know as the ingredients all come from the kitchen.

There are tonnes of recipes for natural beauty and grooming out there. I am sharing my personal experience, with some of my tried and tested, super-quick favourites, mostly passed on by my crafty Mum. Please do not use any ingredients you are allergic to and always avoid the eye area when applying.

An exfoliating scrub is the best thing for the said ingrown hairs and brightening dull winter skin. An egg and sugar scrub for sloughing off dead cells will do the trick while softening the skin.
Separate the yellow from the white. Beat the yolk. (You don’t need to use all of it if you want to keep half for your breakfast.) Gradually fold in sugar until you have got a stiff, granular consistency. Those forgotten, limp sachets saved from cafes can come in handy.

Gently use the mixture to polish your face then rinse it off with water. It’s also great for scrubbing flaky skin or stale fake tan off elbows, knees and the rest of your body, leaving your skin smooth and buffed. For extra moisturising, you can substitute the sugar with oatmeal (raw porridge flakes.) If so, leave the mixture on your face as a mask for 10 mines before exfoliating. As with all these recipes, avoid the delicate area around the eye.

The egg white can be used as an astringent mask for oily, spot prone skin My sisters and I used this on our adolescent zits. This mask will feel a little tight. Whip the egg white up as for meringue. Add two drops of glycerine if you have any. If not, substitute with a teaspoon of honey. For very oily skin you can add two drops of lemon juice, witch-hazel or soothing, antibacterial lavender oil if available. Apply for 10 mins and rinse off.

Any leftover whole egg can be mixed up with natural yoghurt and used as hair conditioner. The recipe is 1 whole egg to 4 tablespoons of yoghurt but I make less and use on dry ends only.

For dry skin, avocado makes a quick, moisturising, vitamin E mask. Blend a couple of scoops of the flesh into a creamy paste, the smoother the better as the goodness will penetrate quicker. Apply as before. If you have oily skin you can blend in an egg white. I fess up that I ate this avocado in salad instead. After all, it’s full of vitamins and antioxidants, which do your skin good from the inside.

Full of enzymes, pineapple is said to help elasticity. This yummy fruit is used to brighten, moisturize and can allegedly, reduce the appearance of fine lines and age spots. This was a new one for me so I tested it out last weekend.

The recipe said to smooth 3 or 4 chunks of pineapple with 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a blender. I have no patience for measuring and rarely follow recipes. So 2 pineapple rings from a tin were flung in the blender (I might have accidentally eaten some though). Pouting a la Nigella Lawson, I flamboyantly splashed in what felt like the right amount of olive oil. Having combination skin, I added a dropeen each of tea tree and lavender oil and blitzed the lot.

I applied the resulting goo to my face for 10 mins. (No photos available!) I had loads over so 1 pineapple ring would suffice. Don’t expect instant miracles but afterwards, my skin really did feel super soft and my complexion was fresh and glowing.

Honey is my all time favourite beauty secret. For tired skin or ‘hangover face’, this should make you look more alive. As well as moisturising, it has anti microbial and apparently, anti inflammatory properties. Leave it on your face 15 mins or so before rinsing.

A friend told me that potato slices are a great toner or clarifying agent for removing the residue of cleansers and closing pores. In the name of research, last weekend I rubbed a slice over my face after the mask. For good measure, I lay down a few mins with fresh slices balancing precariously on my cheeks and forehead. I have no idea if it did anything, but I had a good snooze.

Lately I’ve had a flare up of eczema on my hand. Plain old camomile tea soothes the itch and inflammation. You can put a bag of it into a warm bath or use just a little (cooled) for soaking the affected part.

In the interest of authenticity, this weekend I used the egg and sugar scrub, the pineapple mask, the potato slices and the yoghurt conditioner as well as the camomile tea. I also tried out olive oil in lieu of cleanser, night cream, body lotion and hand cream. (Removing makeup took several goes though.)

My skin feels silky soft and smooth, my hair is shinier and the eczema, much calmer. I’m sure it’s taken yeeeears off me too.

KNITTING AND STITCHING SHOW - - OPPORTUNITY

For the first time at the Knitting & Stitching Show, a Swishing Salon is being held at the RDS Dublin from 28th to 31st October. Its all about the exchange of good quality secondhand clothing, a swap shop! It has been held a couple of times at theLondon show and it has worked really well.

There will be craft tables in the same area working on little projects that tie in with recycling, customising and embelishing clothing and making accessories from recycled bits and bobs. These activities have proved really popular in London  .

In London there were 4 round craft tables each with a Brother sewing machine. Some activities at the tables were using the machines and others involved making fascinators or rosettes with recycled materials and knitting with old t-shirt material on giant needles. A small fee to cover materials was charged for each activity and the tables were always full.

Would anyone be interested in being part of the swishing feature at the Knitting & Stitching Show or do you know anyone that would be?  Some space to sell bits and pieces will be offered and obviously all parties involved in the feature will be promoted.

As the show is on next week if you are interested you must contact Wendy by phone  +44 208 692 2299 or directly through the etsy contact link
http://www.etsy.com/convo_new.php?to_username=twistedthread

Sounds like it could be great fun and an amazing opportunity to showcase creative talents.  So get in touch with Wendy as soon as possible.  Would be great to see you there.
Cheers

Art Classes - University of Limerick

Hi all!!!

At present I have organised an Art in Residence (AIR 2010) programme here in the University of Limerick where I work. The event which kicked off today offers students living on campus the opportunity to select a piece of work from our print collection to hang in their house or apartment for the duration of their stay living on campus.

As part of the programme a number of events are taking place this week! One of the main events is that students are offered the chance to participate in free art classes in a number of the student villages! I had them all organised but unfort. and at the last minute, I have been let down by some due to illness and various reasons! :(

So, maybe someone out there may be interested in helping! Its very last minute I know! The classes are taking place this wednesday, October 20th between 19:30 and 21:00 here in UL. Ideally I need someone who can or is interested in teaching painting, a printing technique or basic drawing skills! However if you wish to teach a crafty skill and use of some of your left over 'meant for the bin' items (I may be even willing to contribute! :)) then you can do that too! I'm open to suggestions and ideas!

If you're available and interested - please email me at rohare1982@gmail.com and I'll get back to you about the finer details!

Eyes Open Ireland

This Eyes Open Ireland comes from Odette of Swan and Smerlin

"Botanic Gardens in the Summer"

"On a rare day when my husband is off from work, we'd venture out into town to discover Dublin's nooks and crannies. We've been here for over two years already but we still haven't seen everything! Initially we planned to hike up to the top of the Wicklow mountain again, but the weather wasn't cooperating that day. So I dragged the husband to the Botanic Gardens before he had the chance to sit down in front of the computer where the entire day can drain out so quickly! Needless to say, we both enjoyed the day out. We had a long wonderful walk in the gardens, the soft weather turned out beautiful photographs for me, and the day was capped with a cup of espresso at the garden's cafe. A few minutes from Dublin city centre, the Botanic Gardens is a refreshing and calming escape from the noise of the city."

"I took loads of photographs of the flowers because they never fail to make me smile. I feel that i have bottled up summer's vibrant colors and beautiful textures in these pictures and for me to enjoy them all year through."

"The Botanic Gardens is located in Glasnevin, Dublin 9. During summer, they're open everyday from 9am - 6pm, and on winter time, from 9am - 4pm. They have great facilities such as ample parking spaces for car and coach, wheelchair access, toilets, and education and visitor centre. It's only 3.5 Km north of Dublin city centre, and you may click this link for directions how to get there, whether by bus or by car. And lastly, entrance to the gardens is for free! "
