Etsy Ireland Needs You!

Can you resist those eyes? Jacob, the big Swede (well he does come from a place called Ikea...), is calling on all team bloggers and those who always dreamt of becoming one, to write some exciting stuff for the Etsy Ireland Blog!

We need articles for our sections 'How to Tuesdays', 'Trade Secrets Thursdays' and 'Eyes Open Ireland' in particular, also Introductions and 'I'll Show You Mine', but any ideas are welcome!

Contact me, Brigitte, at my Etsy Shop if you have any article or idea for this blog, and Bridget at her shop for 'Eyes Open Ireland'.

And you never know what will happen when you do put fingers to keyboard... We asked a Ms PO Colour from Belfast:

"Ever since I've written that article for the Etsy Ireland Blog, my sales have increased", she insisted, rattling her knitting needles. "One of my hats was featured in another blog, and I've been asked to go on a radio show."

As you can imagine we were rather intrigued. However, when the excited knitter dropped her balls of wool and while retrieving them muttered something about having found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, been asked on x-factor, and been invited to a candlelit dinner with a certain Mr Craig, we decided that the lady was spinning a bit too much yarn for our liking.

But you never know until you try!

Trade Secrets - to keep your head above water

This week's Trade Secrets come from Brigitte of Purls of Colour, who might have read too many motivational books for her own good.

Stay cool!

It's the recession, and the living is not easy. People's pockets are empty, the purses that still have a few coppers are shut, and although there is a loudly proclaimed trend to prefer homemade to shop-bought, it means that often people want to make things themselves, not buy anything YOU've made.

Don't hang up your hat yet
(light blue yarn by Lindsay Crafts, yellow yarn by Pancake and Lulu on Etsy)

So there you are with your lovely unique goodies on Etsy, feeling like a contestant on the x-factor, hoping to be discovered for your talent, and wondering who to blame or sue if that isn't happening or if members of the panel sneer at you.

You spend your last food money on a market stall (don't do this if you still have to feed the goldfish), and get no return, eating your supplies of Baked Beans for the next couple of days.

Your friends think you have a lovely time sitting in the garden crafting away (which admittedly, you do), but they go out in the evening, while you update your Etsy descriptions again, put a treasury together, or decide what else you can do without (if these Crocs die a death, I can really live without them, I really really can...)

The Craft sector - La Boheme 2010...

So what do you do when Etsy bombards you with 1001 success stories, but you are not one of them? I do love getting tips from Etsy, but it sometimes feels like looking at beautiful people with perfect white teeth, while your worst nightmare is that yours are falling out!

Here are some Purls of Wisdom (thanks to Ruth for that expression!) for when the going is tough, or when nothing seems to be going at all:

Aaahhh, bliss!

- whatever you do, buy good coffee - even when you spend your last money on it, because you'll love it, especially on days when the world just doesn't seem to love you!
(same goes for chocolate)

- get out into the sun, even if it is an Irish one and it doesn't last for long. It does you good, gives you new ideas, and is free! Remember Baz Luhrmann though (wear sunscreen!)

- encourage your friends to share their awful office stories and remember how much you hated the air conditioning and the instant coffee!

- share a good moan with other crafters

- ignore any success stories and good advice at least for a day. Focus on your own!

I love myself

Repeat to yourself:

- I love my craft!

- I believe in handmade. I am a crafter, a creative by heart! I don't 'do' mass-produced. I want to create something gorgeous and one of a kind!

- My products are great, because...(list about 10 good things about them, without any but!)

- the only person that is exploited in my business is myself!

- my business is my choice! If I wanted to, tomorrow I could be a (tick as appropriate) astronaut, actor/actress, chat show host, celeb, IT guru, materchef, model, politi...no, delete that one!

Feel better?
No?

Now where's that coffee then?

Team Treasuries! and a new Search option!

Hello team!

First up we have Cloudy Day Dreams of Ireland from Ruth of NiceDaySupplies

Next, one I made myself this afternoon, Light and Warm.

And for some exciting news, Friday last week Etsy released it's new Treasury Search function!

This is proving extremely helpful in locating all of our team treasuries. Simply enter the search term, tags:craftyirelandteam
Like so:

* click on image to enlarge

( you can also just type - or c/p - this url into your address bar http://www.etsy.com/treasury/tags/craftyirelandteam )

You can also search your username to quickly find all the treasuries that you are included in! Try it out, it's fun!

Lastly, remember to send me your treasuries so that I can post them here and share them with the team. I post every Wednesday. Also, if possible, try to send me current treasuries as Etsy seems to only post ones to the Front Page that were made within the last few days.

You can send them to me via convo on Etsy or email them to Rach@balancedcrafts.com

Now off ya go! Click, comment, spread the word!

Happy Wednesday Team! :)

Anyone Can Paint

Just in time for the Etsy Ireland Team ATC swap, here come some words of encouragement by Valerie from CraftyV:

"Anyone can paint!" Did you ever hear that and think "no way!" Well its true. It's such a relaxing hobby, great against stress - and I guess we all have some of that. OK, so what do you need to get started?

BRUSHES

Do you have some small (clean) paint brushes? If not, you can buy some cheap ones from a local art and hobby shop.

These are some of mine as you can tell ,well worked!

PAINTS

Acrylics are good as they dry quickly and you can paint over them if you make a mistake.

As you can see in the photo, there are different size tubes on the market. The smaller tubes are sufficent and last quite a while.

Main colours to buy are blue (Colbalt blue), red (Crimson red), yellow (Process yellow), brown (burnt umber), and of course white.

You can play around with these colours and mix and match - it's amazing all the shades you can make.

SOMETHING TO PAINT ON

Acrylic paper is good and comes in lots of sizes.

You may prefer acrylic board. You will get lots of advice in the art shop. After a while you can progress on to Stretched Canvas. This is what I use all the time now.

At last, find yourself a nice easy picture to follow and don't be afraid of it.

Check out more about Valerie's work on her blog.

Summer Time and the Living is ETSY, Part II

Hi Anne-Marie from byAMOR here, with a second helping of summer inspirations for fellow Crafty Ireland Team members. Part 1 of this article covered July and focused on using this often quieter season on Etsy to revamp aspects of your shop. Part 2 continues in this vein, while honing in on August.

Summer vacations can really fire your creativity. I literally picked some inspiration right off the coast of France this year. I got a crick in my neck scavenging sea glass, pottery and slate on the Normandy beaches. You can’t always come home from your break with fresh supplies, but if elements of your holiday creep into your art, telling the story in your description makes it all the more real and alluring. A photo of whatever it was that inspired you can catch the imagination of the buyer too.

August evokes childhood memories of the annual trek into town to buy school uniforms, books and supplies. (Yep that’s me with my collar half out, showing an early penchant for asymmetrical designs.) Four daughters with two year gaps between us must have been a nightmare for my parents. I suffered the heat and boredom of this summer ritual, but the highlight was stocking up on fresh stationery and art supplies.

August is the perfect time to list back to school supplies. Makelovely has hit the mark with her hand-dyed zipper case.

Searching for items to feature in this series has drawn my attention to the question of tags. (cheerful gift tags, courtesy of Propeller.) I’ve been conducting shopping searches on Etsy using the terms ‘craftyirelandteam’ plus keywords like ‘back to school’, ‘summer’ ‘Leo’ , and other themes or colours of the moment.

I thought I had a decent handle on tagging. Yet my own items did not always pop up in my searches when they should have. It finally dawned on me that I have missed several tagging opportunities by not paying enough attention to Etsy’s merchandising desk.

Yes, I add a topical listing to my shop every now and then and tag it accordingly. But what about relevant colours and themes that are already lurking at the back of the shop, sadly labelled with last season’s buzz words, or worse, never-been-buzz-words at all? Take one of July’s hot colours, ‘robins egg blue’ for example. I had a few items in or featuring this shade but most were tagged the same old ‘pale blue’. Guess who’s feeling blue now.....?

So I’ve made a little mid-year resolution. I will use this month to revisit my tagging and in future I'll approach it with one eye on trends and colour shades.

Continuing on the subject, using the tag ‘craftyirelandteam’ on every one of your listings means fellow team members can find you when putting together treasuries and blog features or when shopping within the team.

A search for ‘peridot’, the birthstone of the month, turned up this charming necklace by Silkstone designs. Peridot is an unusual transparent green stone. This semi-precious gem has a long tradition as a power stone. It is associated with healing of emotional wounds and is said to bring clarity and a sense of well being. In ancient Egypt, peridot was known as the ‘sun stone’. It was used to bring calm to the mind and was believed to promote successful relationships.

Crafty possibilities abound for August’s zodiac sign, Leo. I’m thinking cards, handmade beads, mobile phone charms, paper bookmarks and cuddly plush lions for a start. ‘Teen’ or ‘teenager’ might be a tag to consider including.

If you plan to list birthstones or zodiac signs, it’s a good idea to tag with the relevant month and the words ‘ birthstone’ ‘star sign’ ‘zodiac’ et. Buyers don’t necessarily know what the stone or sign for each month actually is so their search could be quite general.

I couldn’t write an article about August and leave out Beelicious crafts’ fruit-slice money purses. You can almost taste the sweet flavour of summer.

To wind up, August hails the coming of the academic year. If you are considering learning a new craft, or up-skilling in some way, you might find inspiration from nightcourses.com.

Methinks a beginners class in photography might serve me well now...

A Pretty Floral Arrangement For < 5€

Dear All, It's Margo from lilabelledesign, I love making jewellery but another passion of mine is flowers, check out my blog flowersforweddings.ie. Below, I outline a quick little "recipe" for creating a simple yet effective table arrangement. This arrangement takes about 10 minutes to create and looks impressive without costing the earth. From one bunch of flowers I got 2 arrangements but I would advise on first go use one bunch to get a really full arrangement. Make the arrangement smaller and fill cups, little bowls etc and pile them along a table.

Ingredients
  • Bunch Chrysanthemum (this bunch was purchased in Lidl for €2.99)
  • A Display Pot (use one to suit the occasion, I used black as I wanted a black & white arrangement, use smaller or larger whatever you have at hand)
  • Oasis (oasis can be purchased in garden centres etc)
  • Scissors (to cut flowers)
  • Old knife (to cut oasis)

Note - Usually when creating an arrangement especially if large, you would secure the oasis to the bowl using a mix of oasis fix, "frogs legs", waterproof florist tape, in this instance i.e small arrangement, this is not required

Method
  1. Cut enough oasis (use knife) to fit your container and to rise above it about 1 inch.
  2. Fill a bucket with water and add some flower food or a sprinkle of sugar also does the job.
  3. Drop the oasis into the bucket, don't push down, just let it absorb the water and once immersed you can use almost immediately (leave it soak about a minute).
  4. Take the flowers and cut into different bunches depending on size of flower stems. Keep as many as long as you can until the end. Remove all leaves from the stems. As this is quite a low arrangement you get good value as you can use every single flower head.

  5. Start in the centre and place one stem in the oasis. You place this as high as you want the arrangement to be.
Place 3 stems around this flower, lower down to an angle. Now you see the "dome" taking shape.

  6. Fill in the rest of the flowers turning the arrangement so that you can check the "dome" looks even all way round, fill in any "bald" patches.

Very easy to do, very quick, very cheap and VERY impressive especially if you do a few of them ;o) Happy Flower Arranging All.
